Harold R. Fletcher Jr., 94, of Nassau passed away on March 13, 2018. Born in Pennsylvania he was the son of the late Harold R. Sr. and Rena Fletcher. Harold grew up in the Albany Orphan Asylum. As a young teen he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, helping to plant thousands of acres of forest across New York and gaining much knowledge about arboriculture which formed the foundation for a lifelong passion for trees and a career into his 80’s as a tree surgeon and arborist. Harold was a proud Navy Veteran, serving his country during WWII. While serving, he received mechanical training and had a career after the service as a diesel mechanic with Dorn’s Motor Freight. After retiring he served the Town of Nassau for many terms as Assessor. Harold volunteered extensively with the American Red Cross as a boating and water safety instructor, founded, taught and helped to run the swim program at Lyons Lake with his wife, Jean for over a decade. He also spent time as a caretaker for St. Mary’s church and cemetery in Nassau. He was always quick with a smile or laughter, and sought to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He was deeply devoted to his family and traveled the country to visit with and assist his beloved siblings, nieces, and nephews. Harold loved gardening, fishing, swimming, boating, everything nautical, and had a deep passion for and understanding of animals and nature. He is predeceased by his wife Jean E. Fletcher and nine siblings. He is survived by his sons, Michael of Elmsford, Robert (Fern) of Feura Bush and Lawrence (April) of Nassau; daughters, Kathleen (William) Fiato of Valatie and Nassau, and Jennie (Don) Barton of Johnsonville; brother, Richard (MaeHwa) Fletcher of CA; sister, Barbara Fletcher of ME; grandchildren, John (Heather) Fiato, Lawrence S. Fletcher, Robert Fletcher, Ashleigh Westervelt, Jordan Barton, and Tony Barton, and many nephews, nieces and great nephews and great nieces. Services will be held at the Thomas P.
