Obituary of James H (Jim) Moran
Jim Moran, 90, of North Chatham, NY, passed away at home on September 18, 2022.
During cake at his 90th birthday dinner six weeks ago, he said, “Ninety? That’s old!” True, but not quite as old as the historic boats he loved to work on.
From the age of 13, he worked on the water, first in Port Washington, NY, at area marinas, then as co-owner of a boatyard in Locust Valley, NY. He was proud to help restore the 1883 oyster sloop Christeen, in Oyster Bay, NY, and then provide guidance and tools for the restoration of the 1903 Hudson River raceabout sloop, Eleanor.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict and avid member of Tri-Village Rod and Gun Club until it became difficult for him to attend. He enjoyed volunteering with the archery programs and youth day; he was a skilled teacher and an amazing shot with a gun and a bow and arrow.
He was a loving grandfather, father and husband. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Laura; his daughters Doreen (Bob) Moran-Mahoney and Victoria (Mark) Caluneo; and beloved grandsons Matthew and Brendan Caluneo, to whom he passed along his interests in woodworking, blacksmithing and gunsmithing.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Tri-Village Rod and Gun Club Youth Programs. PO Box 405, Valatie, NY 12184.
