Joan A. Briggs, 74, of Rensselaer, formerly of East Nassau passed away on August 16th at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital. Born in Albany she was the daughter of the late Nelson and Helen Holland. Joan was a former home health aid for over 20 years, worked for the Community Hospice in Albany and Rensselaer Counties and volunteered for the American Diabetes Association. Family time was very important to Joan and she especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was an avid card player and she taught her grand children how to play. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her stepmother Ruth Holland; sons, Raymond Briggs Jr. and Nelson Charles Briggs; sisters, Shirley Marshman and Helen Goldstein. She is survived by her daughters, Debra (John) McLaughlin of East Nassau, Tammy Lynn Essex of Coxsackie and Jennifer Briggs of Renssealer; step brothers, Joseph Libby, Anthony Libby and Kenneth Libby; sisters, Barbara McLeod and Mary Jane Holland; grandchildren, Rebecca McLaughlin, Heather Darcy, Helena Maguffin, Gonzales, Anthony, Tanasia, and Joshia Figueroa. She is also survived by 13 great grandchildren and her dear friend Georgette Tefoe. A memorial service will be held on September 11, 4:00pm at the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home, 11 Elm St. in Nassau. Relatives and friends are invited to call prior to the service from 2:00 to 4:00pm. In lieu of flowers donations in Joan's memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 North Beauregard St. Alexandria VA 22311.
