Hanson, Leslie Peter (Buck), 93, passed peacefully on October 24, 2015 while surrounded by his family at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center. Born on March 11, 1922 in Greenport, NY to the late Peter and Bertha Hanson, Les lived most of his life in Nassau. He was a proud Veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army in Northern Africa and Italy. Les was employed by various State agencies, including Veterans' Affairs, Civil Defense, and Labor. He was a pitcher in semi-pro baseball during the 1940's and 1950's and was known for his knuckleball. He and his friend Ed Phelps helped found the Nassau Little League, where they spent many years as team managers. Les was a past Commander of the Chandler-Young VFW Post #8162. Les enjoyed family vacations in Maine, St. Louis Cardinals baseball and Green Bay Packers football, early morning golf outings, and all things chocolate. In addition to his parents, Les was predeceased by his beloved wife, Lois Howe Hanson, his sisters Norma Holmes (Ken) and Carolyn Lawson, many cherished in-laws, his dear friend Doris Young, and his two granddogs Sammi and Moe. Les is survived by his daughter, Barbara Hanson of Rotterdam, son Peter Hanson of Nassau, brother in law Raymond Howe (Carmelina) of Salem, Oregon, many nieces and nephews, and his granddog Sasha. The family wishes to thanks the staff of the blue unit at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center for their compassionate care of Les. Funeral service from the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home, 11 Elm St. Nassau at 12:00 noon on Wednesday Oct. 28. Relatives and friends may call prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon that day.
