Archibald Leroy Sherman, Jr., 97, resident of Nassau, passed peacefully with his family by his side on January 26, 2013. Born in Cumberland, RI on July 9, 1915, the youngest of ten children born to Mary Stewart Sherman and Archibald L. Sherman Sr. In his youth he enjoyed many activities such as mountain climbing and motorcycling. He was also a long distance runner, competing in events such as the Boston Marathon with his brothers. He served in the US Navy during WWII on the USS Smith, later becoming a member of the Tin Can Sailor Association. He married Carolyn Wilcox of Woonsocket, RI on May 29, 1948. The couple moved to Nassau in 1948 to begin a 32-year career with Niagara Mohawk. Along his journey he served as a life member and past chief of the Nassau Hose Company #1 with over 55 years of active service. He was a member of the Fire Police, a charter member of the Nassau Ambulance, he received; the Fireman of the Year Award in 1986, the Dick Becker Service award in 2003, and was awarded the Dick Grogan Award from the Rensselaer Elks Club for community service. Archie was the former Code Officer for the Village of Nassau and groundskeeper for the St. Mary's Cemetery in Nassau for more than 50 years. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church and also served as a poll watcher for many years.

He is survived by his sister Marion Sherman and his daughter Priscilla Sherman, 3 grandsons, Jamison, Ryan and Kyle Witbeck and one granddaughter Ashleigh Diaz, six great-grandchildren, Isabella, Sully, Sawyer Bridger, Keira and Rowan Witbeck and many nieces and nephews. His beloved wife of 60 years predeceased him in 2007. Brother James Sherman also of Nassau predeceased him in 1993. Archie was truly an icon in his community, his presence will be sorely missed by all. Rest in peace now Archie, you have served your country, your community and your family well beyond the call of duty. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday February 9, 2013, 11:00am at St. Mary's Church in Nassau. Relatives and friends are invited to call at St. Mary's Church Friday February 8th from 3:00pm to 8:00pm. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery Nassau. All are invited back to St. Mary's Parish Hall, directly behind the Church immediately following the burial. In lieu of flowers donations in Archie's name may be made to the Nassau Hose Company #1 P.O. Box 42 Nassau NY 12123 or to the Community Hospice Of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd. Rensselaer NY 12144.
