Fulvia W. Strevell

Nassau

Fulvia W. Strevell, Age 99 ½ , passed away peacefully on June 6, 2013 at Evergreen Commons surrounded by her loving children. Born in Chicago on January 13, 1914 to Charles and Laura Washburne she was predeceased by her husband of 62 years Donald W. Strevell, Sr. in 1999 and her sister Laura in 1970. Fulvia moved to Hartford CT at age 10 and after high school attended Morse Secretarial School. She moved to Boston following her marriage in 1937 where her children were born. She moved her family to Nassau in 1945 where she became an active member of the Grace United Methodist Church. When her 2 children were very small she was instrumental in the formation of a Methodist Church Women's Group called the Willing Helpers. The women of the church provided help to community members with, meals, child care, illness and other needs. After her children had grown, she became a volunteer at the Donald P. Sutherland Elementary School in Nassau, helping children with math, reading and other needs for many years as a Sr. volunteer in the STARS program. Fulvia had an amazing life centered around her loving family and her tireless research tracing her roots. In 1960 she began her research, she spent countless hours in libraries in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut tracing her connection back to Roger Williams, founder and governor of Rhode Island. She was honored in 1991 having successfully completed all of the documentation necessary to connect her to Roger Williams and Benjamin Elihu Washburne who served in Abraham Lincoln's cabinet. In her spare time she loved to garden, she planted and canned all of the vegetables she could possibly need. She took great pride in her flower gardens as well. She and her husband travelled the U.S. and Canada by car and then decided to winter in Venice FL. In her later years she was losing her sight and eventually became legally blind. Thanks to the books on tape from the Association of the Blind she continued to enjoy the literature being read to her. She also enjoyed watching Sunday football and was a regular pool participant, often coming in last on a weekly basis. Fulvia was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother and friend to many. She lived her life well and we will miss her. She is survived by her son Donald W. Strevell (Lynne), daughter, Deborah S. Romer (William), her cherished grandchildren, Scot Strevell, Susan (George) Silliman, Todd (Jennifer) Romer, Trent (Melissa) Romer, Tara Romer and 10 very special great grandchildren who always made her smile, A'Chante Wilson, Ryan and Timothy Strevell, Chesney Romer, Benjamin, Christian and Jonathan Romer and Abbigal, Allison and Arricca Silliman. Funeral service from the Grace United Methodist Church, Church St. Nassau on Monday June 10th at 11:00am. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home, 11 Elm St. Nassau on Sunday June 9th from 4-8pm. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
