Joan Knapton

September 10, 1946 — August 28, 2010

East Nassau-Joan Eleanor Cserne Knapton loving wife, mother, grandmother and a longtime resident of East Nassau died Saturday August 28, 2010 from complications after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. Daughter of the late Joseph and Vilma Szalay Cserne of Massapequa Park, NY, she is survived by her Husband Dean, daughters Amy Cornell and husband Wayne of Hoosick Falls and Cathy Sweeney and husband Dave of Aurora CO, grandchildren Tyler and Jeffrey Brewer, Michael and Sadie Cornell, a sister Arlene Koster and husband Fred of Ballston Spa, a brother Robert Cserne of Massapequa Park, and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Knapton was a member of the Brainard United Methodist Church and the Tamarac Twirlers Square Dance Club. She was a 4-H leader and involved in Cooperative Extension. She enjoyed crafts, needlework and flower gardening. Mrs. Knapton received her undergraduate education in secondary Education from State University College at Oswego and her Master's degree in Reading from the University at Albany SUNY. She worked as a teacher's aide and substitute teacher and for the 1990 Census.

Funeral Tuesday 10am from the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home, 11 Elm Street Nassau.

Family and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home Monday 5-8pm.

Interment will be in the East Nassau Cemetery.

Donations in memory of Joan Knapton may be made to The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Capital District Chapter, 2 City Square, 324 Broadway Albany, NY 12207-2977 and to WAMC-FM 90.3, 318 Central Avenue, Albany NY 12206. The family is grateful for prayers and support from friends, family and community during her long illness.
