Dr. V. James Boyle, Jr., 75, formerly of East Nassau, NY, died peacefully on October 26, 2011 with his family by his side. He was the loving husband of Joyce (Kiernan) Boyle for 50 years.

Born and raised in Windsor Locks, CT, Jim was the son of the late Mary McCormack and Vincent Boyle. He attended Cathedral High School in Springfield, MA, where he was a standout basketball player. He earned a BS degree in Biology from St. Michael's College, a MS in Bacteriology from Boston College, and a PhD in Microbiology from Indiana University.

In 1961, he married Joyce S. Kiernan of West Roxbury, MA. Upon completion of his PhD in 1965, he received a position as a research microbiologist for Sterling Winthrop Research Institute in Rensselaer. They moved to East Nassau, where they raised their six children and resided for 37 years. He also held research scientist positions with Albany Medical College and International Paper Company in Tuxedo, NY. In 2002, Jim and Joyce retired to Salisbury, MD where their daughter Kathleen resides. Jim devoted much of his time to supporting his children's academic and athletic endeavors. Whether it was school work, soccer games, track meets, or skiing, he always encouraged them to achieve. Summer vacations on Cape Cod were enjoyed by the whole family and were a source of many great memories. He enjoyed various sports and was a lifelong Red Sox fan. He performed volunteer work with teens and civic programs in the East Nassau community and was a member of the St. Mary's Church choir. Later in his life, he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and writing poetry. Throughout his life, Jim always had a great sense of humor that will be missed very much.

In addition to his wife Joyce, Jim is survived by his children Christopher (Peggysue) Boyle, Kathleen (Dr. Pasquale) Petrera, Carolyn (Pasquale) Granata, Kiernan (Sherianna) Boyle, Dr. James (Kasey) Boyle, and Mary-Colleen (Justin) Zucconi; sister Patricia Ann Boyle; sister-in-laws Marilyn Sten and Barbara ( Richard) Fallon; as well as 17 grandchildren and 10 nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home, 11 Elm St., Nassau, on Friday, November 4, 2011 from 3-8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Church St., Nassau, on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 11:00 am. There will be no interment at this time.
