John (Jack) Nicholls Hurley passed away peacefully on Friday, December 9, 2011. Born on March 26, 1935 to Cecil and Edith Ransford Hurley, John grew up in the Riders Mills area of the Town of Chatham and graduated from New Lebanon Central School. He was employed by the State of New York for the next thirty seven years, retiring from the former New York State Capitol Police in October of 1990 as a Sergeant. John was a volunteer fireman for sixty years, having joined the Tri-Village Fire Company (Malden Bridge, Old Chatham and Chatham Center) at the age of sixteen and served as chief of that company for five years and remains a lifetime member. Later he became an active member of the Tsatsawassa Protective Fire Company Inc. serving Brainard and East Nassau and remained so until his death. John served in the New York State National Guard and was a proud lifetime member of the NRA, and the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association.

John is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth M. Phillips Hurley who he married on August 1, 1959. His sons Patrick John (Donna) of Hannacroix, NY and Michael Shawn of San Diego, CA, to whom he was a devoted father, as well as grandsons Eric Michael Hurley and Aiden Scott Demorest. He also enjoyed a full childhood with his surviving sister Joyce Hurley Mix of Saratoga Springs and her only child, Carolyn (Thomas) Mix Robinson and her family. He was brother-in-law to Josephine (Jimmie) Roberts, Herbert Phillips, Alice (Stanton) Bentley, Hattie Powers, Dorothy (Joseph) Young, Donald (Gail) Phillips and Ruth (John) Mandigo as well as being survived by numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 13, at 11am at the Thomas P. Mooney Funeral Home, 11 Elm St. Nassau, conducted by Pastor Jonathan Walter, of the North Chatham United Methodist Church. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be in the Old Chatham Union Cemetery.
